What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were many but highlights were : 1. Victoria Falls – swimming in the devil’s pool. Helicopter flight over the falls. Stunning vistas from both Zambian and Zimbabwe sides. 2. Getting up close and personal with wild life (literally!) – Lions in Antelope Park, Zimbabwe and Lion Park, Jo’burg, SA – Cheetahs in Otjitotongwe, Namibia, Fur Seal in Swakopmund, Namibia, Elephants in Livingstone And Ostriches in Oudtshoorn, SA. 3. Namib desert – Climbing dune 45 at sunrise, sunset views at Spitzkoppe. Stunning and unusual landscapes at Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and Fish River Canyon. 4. Having a go at Quad biking in Sawkopmund, Namibia. As I was inexperienced I went on the easy ride, fun nevertheless. 5. Mokoro rides in the Okavango delta, Botswana. 6. Numerous game parks – including Kruger, Milwane, St Lucia Wetlands, Addo Elephant Park, Etosha, Chobe, Hwange and Antelope Park – Plenty of wildlife and birds, hopefully I have some good photos (work in progress) – Watching animals come to the water holes, particularly at Etosha and Hwange National Parks.

What did you think of your tour leader?

I had 2 tour leaders, Alan on Pretoria to Vic Falls section and Trimo from Vic Falls to Pretoria. Both were very good and knowledgable about Southern Africa. Both were accompalised tour leaders. In addition the cooks and drivers on both sections were also excellent.

What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

finding non tracked white rhino in matobo hills park, walking with lions at antelope park, great zimbabwe 14th century royal ruins, bulawayo city tour.

What did you think of your tour leader?

excellent, good dynamics for this short trip. less of a culture difference than noted on some other african tours with local tour leaders.

Do you feel your holiday benefited local people?

yes, got plenty of time for conversation on beitbridge border, used facilities in camps and had local guides for attractions and local tour leaders.

Do you feel that you got under the skin of a country?

yes, got to do walking tours in bulawayo, gweru, musina, vic falls towns, conversation interactions, etc.

What advice would you give to other travellers?

lovely country, still quite basic, plenty to see and do and a different way to get to victoria falls.

What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Climbing Dune 45, walking with lions, being rescued by Kembo by canoe in the Delta because all the canoes had been taken back and the owners had gone back to their village, falling off the truck seat but managing not to spill my wine, elephant ride, the Cessna plane rides over the Delta, Victoria Falls (even though I've been there twice before), arriving late to the first meeting, and lots of laughing!

What did you think of your tour leader?

They were brilliant.

Do you feel your holiday benefited local people?

I certainly hope so.

What advice would you give to other travellers?

Just enjoy the ride!

South Africa Forum Feedback

is it safe to travel south africa?

i'm a hk girl and planning to travel w/2 good fds (2 man)in Cape Town, Johannesburg etc in this Oct 08. what i searched fr the internet is these cities "have recently been hit by a wave of xe phobic violence as mobs of locals roam the city centre and surrounding townships in search of foreign refugees and migrants. Dozens of people have been killed, and the government has deployed the army to contain the disturbances. Travellers should steer well clear of any street clashes." i'm doubt and worry whether we should go ahead or stop. any comment?
