Slovakia
Slovakia is one of Europe's youngest countries, gaining independence in 1993. Formerly it was the easternmost half of Czechoslovakia. Slovakia is studded with ornate castles, with imposing Baroque architecture and towns where you could be walking through the 15th century. Out in the countryside of Slovakia life continues much as it always has, with folk traditions still strong and a sense of rural community. The High Tatra Mountains lie on the border between Slovakia and Poland, an imposing range with dramatically jagged peaks and cool alpine lakes, where hikers can explore over 600km of trails.
